3/3/10  Friendly result:  England 3 Egypt 1

2/12/09  England seeded for World Cup draw - There was huge relief for England fans earlier today as it was revealed that England have made it into the seeded Pot 1 for Friday's draw. Joining the hosts South Africa, Pot 1 will also include Argentina, Brazil, Holland, Italy, Germany and Spain. According to FIFA rankings, The Cheating French and Portugal could have been seeded but their poor performances in qualifying mean they could face England in the group stages.

Pot 1 (seeds): ENGLAND, South Africa, Argentina, Brazil, Holland, Italy, Germany, Spain

Pot 2: Australia, Japan, North Korea, South Korea, Honduras, Mexico, USA, New Zealand

Pot 3: Chile, Paraguay, Uruguay, Nigeria, Cameroon, Ivory Coast, Ghana, Algeria

Pot 4: Denmark, The Cheating French, Greece, Serbia, Portugal, Slovakia, Slovenia, Switzerland

23/11/09 FIFA announce World Cup fan fests - Following the success of fan parks in the 2006 World Cup in Germany, a host of international cities will stage fan fests during the 2010 tournament - where fans can watch games for free. London, Paris, Rome, Sydney, Berlin, Mexico City and Rio de Janeiro will all lay on facilities for fans while 10 locations in South Africa will be announced at a later date.

Bosnia Herzegovina 0 - 1 Portugal  Portugal win 2-0 on aggregate.

The Cheating French 1 - 1 Republic of Ireland  AET. The Cheating French win 2-1 on aggregate.

Algeria 1 Egypt 0 - Africa's tense play off between bitter rivals Algeria and Egypt ended in victory for the green and whites - as Egypt failed to match the heroics that had sent Group C qualification into extra time. Neutral Sudan hosted the game and with security beefed up, tensions on the pitch matched those in the stands. The winning goal would have graced the World Cup final itself - A stunning volley on 40 minutes from Antar Yahia.

New Zealand secure World Cup finals spot - Plymouth Argyle striker Rory Fallon scored the only goal as the Kiwis qualified for their first World Cup since Spain '82 - breaking the hearts of Bahrain, who fall at the final play-off round for the second time in 4 years. New Zealand rode their luck with goalkeeper Mark Paston making a series of saves, including a second half penalty, but the All Whites held on to spark wild scenes of celebration in Wellington.

No surprises in Group 4 - They do it every time, and they've done it again. Achieving what England couldn't two years ago, the Germans travelled to Moscow and beat Russia on the plastic. Miroslav Klose's 34th minute strike means Guus Hiddink's men must face a play-off to qualify for South Africa.

Ivory Coast book flights to South Africa - A big day in qualifying has already produced another finalist for the 2010 World Cup. Didier Drogba's equaliser in the 67th minute against Group E opponents Malawi means the Ivory Coast join Ghana and the hosts South Africa as World Cup representatives from the African continent.

4/10/09  England squad for final two qualifiers announced - Fabio Capello tonight named his final squad in World Cup qualification. There will be no experimenting with personnel for the trip to Ukraine and home game with Belarus as Capello attempts to build momentum in the run up to the finals. Perhaps Theo Walcott can consider himself unlucky not to be recalled as he continues his recovery from a back injury.
