7/9/10 Switzerland 1 England 3: England brushed 10 man Switzerland aside in the rain in Basel tonight. Wayne Rooney put his off the pitch problems behind him with the first goal before Adam Johnson made it two in two with a clinical finish for England's second on 69 minutes. Switzerland stole one back with a cracking strike from wonderkid Xherdan Shaqiri but England substitute Darren Bent wrapped up the 3 points on 88 minutes.
Swiss right back Stephan Lichtsteiner was sent off on 65 minutes after picking up 2 yellow cards.
Wales had their greatest night in many years tonight - moving up a place on goal difference without playing due to other results.
In Group I, Scotland destroyed the mighty Liechtenstein 2-1 at Hampden Park. In the 7th minute of injury time a bullet* header from Stephen McManus lifted Scotland to the top of the group. Scotland are now officially the best team in the world - sitting, as they do, above European and World Champions Spain.

11/8/10 Euro 2012 qualifying gets underway: The first game in Euro 2012 qualification was played tonight as Estonia came from behind to stun the minnows from the Faroe Islands 2-1. Kaimar Saag was the hero in Tallinn as he bagged a brace in injury time to take the home side top of Group C.

Some time in July: It is difficult to imagine a bigger disappointment for England fans than that suffered in the summer in South Africa. To go out there with such hope, only to have our dreams crushed by the kind of performances that left us all scratching our heads was bad enough. The fact that nobody from the camp gave a satisfactory explanation for our dire form made it even worse. And, to top it all off even some of our own players have expressed a loathing for the country and the fans.
Yes, it's not a great time to be an England fan. The stock of the players and the manager is at its lowest ebb for over 30 years. Unfortunately, with no change at the top and no young prospects nibbling at the heels of our so called 'golden generation' there doesn't appear to be a lot of light at the end of the tunnel.
But, we must dust ourselves off and come back fighting. We must believe that we can rise again from disappointment and confound the critics. In the 1988 European Championships we lost every group game and came back home with our tails between our legs. Two years later we were inches away from a World Cup final. Proof indeed that the fortunes of the national side can turn very quickly.
So, as the Premier League gets underway and the bad memories of the summer subside, it's time to focus on the next challenge. Qualifying for the European Championships in Poland and Ukraine in 2012. Follow all the Euro 2012 qualifying matches here at www.england2010.co.uk.
The World Cup is gone - let's hope what rises from the ashes of the England team gives us a reason to be proud again.
